The Supreme Council of the 33rd and Last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for Bulgaria was installed and constituted on 5 May 2018.
In the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, during a solemn ceremonial ritual, the Supreme Councils of the Grand Orient of Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Italy, and Russia of the Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of the 33rd and Last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, represented by their Sovereign Grand Commanders, conferred a Patent upon the Most Powerful and Illustrious Brother Ivan Sariev as Sovereign Grand Commander, and upon the Powerful and Illustrious Brother Spas Panchev as Deputy Grand Commander, thereby granting them full authority and powers to establish, organize, and form a Supreme Council for Bulgaria of the Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of the 33rd and Last Degree, in the Orient of the city of Sofia, in accordance with the Grand Constitutions of the Masonic Order, adopted in Berlin, Prussia, in 1786.
The Sovereign Grand Commander appointed nine Sovereign Grand Inspectors General as active members of the Supreme Council of the 33rd and Last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, thereby formally constituting the Supreme Council.
At present, the Sovereign Grand Commander is the Most Powerful and Illustrious Brother Spas Panchev, a Freemason since 1994. He is an Honorary Past Master of Lodge “Zarya” – Orient Sofia, and Past Master of Lodges “Bolyari” – Orient Veliko Tarnovo and “Zlaten Vek” – Orient Shumen, under the jurisdiction of the United Grand Lodge of Bulgaria. In 2001, in Vicenza, Italy, he was initiated into the 32nd Degree and continues his membership within the Southern Jurisdiction of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. From 5 May 2018, he served as Deputy Grand Commander, and as of 28 February 2024, he serves as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council of the 33rd and Last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for Bulgaria.
The Supreme Council of the 33rd and Last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for Bulgaria, under the leadership of its Sovereign Grand Commander, the Most Powerful and Illustrious Brother Spas Panchev, is the sole regular and recognized Supreme Council within the territory of the Orient of Bulgaria. It operates regularly in mutual recognition and full harmony with the United Grand Lodge of Bulgaria, which has received recognition from the United Grand Lodge of England and from 190 regular Grand Lodges worldwide.
The Supreme Council of the 33rd and Last Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for Bulgaria has established a network of Subordinate Bodies covering the entire geographical territory of the country. Actively working are ten Lodges of Perfection, seven Chapters of the Rose Croix, five Councils of Kadosh, and one Consistory.
